How to use AVI to MP4
- Choose one or several .avi files.
- Press Convert to MP4; the settings are chosen for wide compatibility.
- Wait while the progress indicator runs; DV camcorder files are large and take longer.
- Download the new MP4s individually or as a ZIP.
Why AVI needs converting today
AVI is Microsoft's container from 1992. Files inside it commonly use DivX or Xvid (MPEG-4 Part 2), uncompressed DV from tape camcorders, or Motion JPEG from old point-and-shoot cameras, with MP3 or PCM sound. Web browsers cannot play AVI at all, and phone galleries frequently show nothing but an error.
The conversion uses libx264 at CRF 23 with yuv420p colour and AAC audio at 128 kbps, plus faststart for online playback. H.264 is far more efficient than the codecs typical of AVI, so a DV or MJPEG clip often shrinks dramatically, which makes family videos easy to share or archive in the cloud.
Limitations
- Interlaced camcorder footage is not deinterlaced, so fast motion may show comb-like lines on progressive screens.
- Badly indexed or truncated AVIs, common with old downloads, may fail or stop early.
- Only the first video and the best-ranked audio stream are kept.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 be smaller than my AVI?
Usually, especially for DV and Motion JPEG sources. Xvid files may end up a similar size, but play on far more devices.
My AVI plays in VLC but fails here. Why?
VLC tolerates damaged indexes and rare codecs. The browser engine is stricter; a file that is broken or uses a very unusual codec may not decode.
Does the conversion keep the original frame rate?
Yes. No frame rate change is requested, so the MP4 keeps the timing of the AVI.
Are my family videos uploaded?
No. Each file is read and converted inside your browser and is not sent to any server.
