How to use Background Remover
- Add one or more photos with a clear main subject.
- Press Remove background; on first use the page downloads the AI model, which takes a little while.
- Wait while each image is processed; progress shows in the status line.
- Download the -nobg PNG files, or all of them as a ZIP.
How the background removal works
The page uses the open-source @imgly/background-removal library. It downloads a segmentation model (the page estimates about 40 MB) the first time, which your browser then caches. The model predicts, pixel by pixel, which parts belong to the foreground, and everything else is made transparent.
Results are best on photos with one clearly defined subject and reasonable contrast against the background: portraits, product shots on a table, pets. Fine hair, glass, smoke and objects that blend into similar colours are harder and may show rough or missing edges.
Limitations
- An internet connection is needed the first time to fetch the library and model from public CDNs.
- Processing is heavy: large images can take tens of seconds and may fail on low-memory phones.
- There is no manual brush to touch up edges the model gets wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo sent to an AI server?
No. Only the model files are downloaded; the photo itself is analysed on your device, inside this tab.
Why is the first run so slow?
The model has to download once. Later runs in the same browser use the cached copy and start much faster.
Can I use this for an exam application photo?
Check the notification first. Most exam forms want a plain light background, so the Change Background Colour tool, which fills the area with white, is usually more suitable than a transparent PNG.
