Blur Background
Recreate a portrait-mode look on any photo. The subject stays crisp while the scene behind it is softened, with a slider to choose how strong the blur should be.

How to use Blur Background
- Add a photo with a clear person, pet or object in front.
- Set Blur strength from 2 to 40 (default 12).
- Press Remove background; the first run downloads the AI model.
- Download the result, saved as JPG.
How the portrait effect is created
Two layers are combined. A blurred copy of the whole photo forms the backdrop, and the sharp subject cut out by the segmentation model is laid back on top. Because the subject detection runs in your browser, no photo is sent anywhere.
A true lens blur grows gradually with distance, while this effect applies one even blur to everything behind the subject. Moderate strengths of 8–15 usually look most natural. It is a quick way to make a cluttered room or crowd less distracting in a profile picture or a speaker photo for an event poster.
Limitations
- The blur is uniform; objects close to the subject are blurred as much as the far background.
- The blur uses canvas filters, which Safari keeps behind an experimental flag, so on Safari the background may stay sharp.
- If the model misjudges the outline, a soft halo or a blurred patch of the subject can appear.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the button say Remove background?
The same subject-detection step is used. Here the background is blurred and kept rather than removed.
Can I blur just part of the background?
No. Everything the model treats as background receives the same blur.
Does it work for group photos?
It can, if the people are clearly in front of the scene, but results vary when people overlap or stand at different distances.
