Why transparency needs PNG
JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so a cut-out saved as JPG would get a solid background again. This page always saves PNG, which carries an alpha channel recording how see-through each pixel is. Soft edges, such as hair, keep partial transparency instead of a hard jagged outline.
Subject detection is automatic, handled by a machine-learning segmentation model that runs locally in your browser. It suits product photos for an online shop, a signature or stamp lifted from a plain scan, stickers for chats and cut-outs for a school project collage.
Limitations
- The model looks for a main subject; it cannot make one specific colour transparent, such as white areas inside a logo.
- Transparent PNGs are larger than JPGs, sometimes several times over.
- Busy scenes with several overlapping objects can leave parts of the background or remove parts of the subject.
Frequently asked questions
Will it remove a plain white background from my logo?
Usually, if the logo is a clear shape. Very thin lines or text may be partly lost, because the model is trained mainly on photographic subjects.
Why does the transparent area look white or chequered?
Image viewers show transparency differently. Place the PNG on a coloured slide to confirm the background is truly clear.
Can I put the cut-out on a new background later?
Yes. Layer the PNG in any slide or design app, or use the Change Background Colour tool for a solid fill.
