How to use MP4 to MP3

  1. Choose one or more .mp4 files.
  2. Press Convert to MP3; the audio quality is preset, so there is nothing else to pick.
  3. Watch the percentage while each file is processed in turn.
  4. Save the MP3s one by one or click Download all (ZIP).

From AAC inside MP4 to MP3

Most MP4 files carry AAC audio. Because AAC and MP3 are different codecs, the sound is decoded and re-encoded with LAME using -q:a 2, a variable-bitrate setting that typically averages around 190 kbps. That is high enough that a second lossy step is very hard to hear, while a one-hour lecture still comes to roughly 80–90 MB.

MP3 is worth the conversion when a device or app refuses .mp4 or .m4a files, for example older car head units, basic Bluetooth speakers, or a college portal that only accepts MP3 uploads. If your only goal is listening on a modern phone, the AAC inside the MP4 already plays fine.

Limitations

  • Quality is fixed; you cannot choose a constant bitrate such as 128 or 320 kbps here.
  • Cover art, chapters and the video track are not carried into the MP3.
  • Very long or very large MP4s load fully into browser memory, so files above about 500 MB may fail, especially on phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher bitrate MP3 better than the original audio?

No conversion can add quality. The VBR setting is chosen so that the MP3 sounds the same as the AAC source to most ears.

Can I convert ten lectures at once?

Yes. Select them all and they are converted one after another, then offered together as a ZIP.

Why is the MP3 bigger than I expected?

Phone and app recordings often use 64–128 kbps AAC. The MP3 at around 190 kbps can be larger even though it holds the same sound.

Where does the conversion run?

On your own computer or phone. The MP4 is read by the page and never uploaded.
