GIF to WebM
Replace a bulky GIF on your website or forum post with a WebM clip encoded in VP8. Browsers play it natively in a video tag, and it loads much faster than the original animation.

How to use GIF to WebM
- Choose a .gif file, or several at once.
- There is nothing to configure; press Convert to WEBM.
- Wait for the progress bar to reach 100%.
- Download the .webm file and use it in place of the GIF.
When WebM is the right replacement
WebM is the open container developed for the web, and this tool fills it with VP8 video from libvpx. The encoder targets about 1 Mbps with the realtime deadline and its fastest speed setting, a trade-off that keeps in-browser encoding quick. For typical GIF dimensions of a few hundred pixels, that bitrate is generous and the clip looks clean.
Use WebM when you control the page, such as a blog, documentation site or forum that allows video uploads, and set the video to autoplay, loop and stay muted to mimic a GIF. For sharing on phones or in WhatsApp, MP4 is the safer choice.
Limitations
- The bitrate target is fixed at 1 Mbps, so a very small or simple GIF can end up larger than expected; GIF to MP4 may give a smaller file.
- WebM is not accepted by every app; some older iPhones, video editors and messaging apps will not open it.
- Results with transparent GIFs vary, so check the output if your animation has see-through areas.
Frequently asked questions
Which codec does the WebM use?
VP8 video via libvpx. VP8 is supported by all major browsers that play WebM.
Should I choose WebM or MP4?
WebM is ideal for your own web pages and open-source platforms. MP4 is better for phones, social apps and presentations.
Will the WebM loop like a GIF?
The file itself plays once. Add the loop, autoplay and muted attributes to the video tag, or switch on loop in your player.
Can I convert private GIFs safely?
Yes. Everything is processed in the page by FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so nothing is transmitted.
