Why MP4 beats GIF for animations
GIF stores every frame as a palette image with simple LZW compression, so it cannot take advantage of the fact that most frames barely differ from the last. H.264 encodes only the changes between frames. The tool uses libx264 at CRF 23 with the yuv420p pixel format, which is the combination phones, smart TVs, WhatsApp and PowerPoint all play reliably.
The file is written with faststart so it can begin playing while still loading, which helps when you embed it on a web page. Converting is useful when a messaging app turns your GIF into a still image, or when a presentation stutters on a large animation.
Limitations
- Transparent areas in the GIF become solid in the MP4, because yuv420p has no alpha channel.
- GIFs with an odd width or height (for example 301×200 px) can fail, since this H.264 setting needs even dimensions. Resize the GIF by one pixel first if that happens.
- The MP4 has no sound and will not loop by itself unless the player is set to loop.

How much smaller will the MP4 be?
It varies with the content, but cartoon-style and screen-capture GIFs commonly shrink to a small fraction of their original size.
Will the animation speed stay the same?
Yes, FFmpeg reads the frame timings stored in the GIF and keeps them in the video.
Why did my transparent GIF get a black background?
MP4 with H.264 in this profile cannot store transparency. If you need see-through areas, keep the GIF or use an animated WebP or PNG.
Is my GIF sent to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser tab, so the GIF stays on your device.
