How to use Base64 Encoder and Decoder
- Type or paste into the Text box.
- Click Encode to get Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into readable text.
- To encode a file, use Or encode a file and choose it.
- Copy the output or download it as a .txt file.
What Base64 is for
Base64 represents binary data using 64 safe characters (A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, plus and slash), so it can travel through systems built for text, such as email, JSON or HTML. The output is about a third larger than the input. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, which is why Hindi words and emoji survive a round trip.
Developers use it to embed small icons in CSS, inspect tokens or debug API payloads. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it, so never treat it as a way to hide passwords.
Limitations
- File encoding outputs a full data URL beginning with data: and the file type; remove that prefix if you need raw Base64.
- Decoding produces text only; it cannot rebuild an image or PDF file for download.
- URL-safe Base64 using - and _ is not supported for decoding.
Frequently asked questions
Why does decoding show Not valid Base64?
The input has characters outside the Base64 set, or it is URL-safe Base64. A data URL prefix also causes this; delete everything up to the comma.
Is Base64 secure?
No. It only changes how data is written. Use proper encryption for anything sensitive.
Is a large file safe to encode here?
It is read locally and never uploaded, but very large files produce huge text that can slow the page.
