How to use Add Page Numbers to a PDF
- Add one or more PDFs.
- Pick a Position: top or bottom, left, centre or right.
- Edit the Format text; {n} becomes the page number and {total} the last number.
- Set Start at, Font size and Colour, then click Add page numbers.
Formats and starting numbers
Numbers are drawn in Helvetica directly onto each page, about 20 points from the top or bottom edge and 30 points from the side for corner positions. The {total} value respects your start number: a 10-page file starting at 5 runs from 5 to 14 and shows 14 as the total.
A custom start is useful when your file is one part of a larger submission, such as annexures that must continue from page 21 of a main report. Numbered pages also make printed study notes and dissertation drafts easier to keep in order.
Limitations
- The built-in Helvetica font only covers Latin characters, so Hindi or other Indian scripts in the format text will not work.
- Every page is numbered; there is no option to skip a cover page.
- Numbers may overlap existing footer text if the page has content right at the edge.
Frequently asked questions
Can I write numbers like 3 / 20?
Yes. Type {n} / {total} in the Format box. Any plain text around the placeholders is kept.
How do I leave the cover page unnumbered?
Extract every page except the cover, number that file starting at 2, then merge the cover back in front with the Merge PDF tool.
Are my documents processed on a server?
No. Numbering happens in your browser and the result is downloaded straight from the page.
