Why PNG for document pages
PNG uses lossless compression, so every pixel pdf.js renders is stored exactly. Thin lines in maps and flowcharts, subscripts in formulae and small table text stay clean instead of picking up the halo that JPEG introduces. The trade-off is file size: a busy page at high dpi can run to several megabytes.
Use PNG when you plan to crop, annotate or zoom into the page later, for instance snipping a diagram from an NCERT PDF into your notes, or capturing a chart for a presentation.
Limitations
- Pages are rendered on white, so transparent areas in the original do not stay transparent.
- PNG files are much larger than JPG or WEBP for photo-heavy pages.
- Only one PDF is handled at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG better quality than JPG here?
At the same dpi, yes for text and line art, because nothing is thrown away during saving.
What dpi should I pick for printing?
Print (288 dpi) gives the most detail. Very high (216 dpi) is often enough and makes smaller files.
Is my PDF read by a server?
No. pdf.js renders the pages in your browser and the PNGs are created locally.
