When WEBP makes sense
WEBP is a modern image format from Google that usually produces noticeably smaller files than JPEG for the same visual quality. The tool renders each page with pdf.js and asks your browser's encoder to save it as WEBP at a high quality setting.
It is a good fit for web publishing: sample pages of a study guide on a course website, a brochure preview, or notices posted on a blog. For sending to government portals or older software, JPG is still the safer choice because not every system accepts WEBP.
Limitations
- Some older apps and many upload forms do not accept WEBP files.
- Encoding relies on your browser; very old browsers without WEBP export may produce PNG data or fail.
- Pages are flattened onto a white background.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is WEBP than JPG?
It varies by page, but a saving of roughly a quarter to a third is common for document pages.
Can I open WEBP on Windows or a phone?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Android and Windows Photos open WEBP files.
Does conversion happen online?
Only in the sense that it runs in a web page. The work is done by your browser and the PDF is not uploaded.
