How to use Extract Text from a PDF
- Upload a PDF containing selectable text.
- Click Extract text.
- Review or edit the result in the text box.
- Use Copy to put it on the clipboard or Download to save a .txt file.
How text is pulled out
pdf.js reads the text objects stored on every page and the tool joins them into lines by their vertical position, with a blank line between pages. Formatting such as bold, font size, tables and images is dropped, leaving plain text that any editor can open.
Students use this to lift paragraphs from a government report or an Economic Survey chapter into their own notes, and office users to reuse content from a PDF letter without retyping it.
Limitations
- Scanned pages contain images, not text, so nothing is extracted; the tool says so and suggests converting to PNG and using the OCR tool.
- Multi-column layouts and tables may come out with lines merged or in an odd order.
- Some PDFs with unusual font encodings return garbled characters.
Frequently asked questions
Why did I get a message saying no selectable text was found?
The PDF is probably a scan or photo. Convert the pages with PDF to PNG, then run Image to Text (OCR).
Does it keep Hindi text?
It returns whatever Unicode text the PDF stores. Many Hindi PDFs use legacy fonts, which can come out as jumbled Latin characters.
Is the extracted text saved online?
No. Extraction runs in your tab, and the text exists only in the box and any file you download.
