AVI to MKV

Move an AVI collection into Matroska with modern codecs. The MKV holds H.264 video and AAC sound, which media servers like Plex and Kodi stream efficiently, and it is usually smaller than the DivX or DV original.

How to use AVI to MKV

  1. Choose one or more .avi files.
  2. Press Convert to MKV.
  3. Watch the progress percentage while each file is re-encoded.
  4. Download the MKVs or a single ZIP, then add them to your media library.

Why rebuild an AVI library as MKV

AVI cannot cleanly hold modern features such as B-frame-heavy H.264, variable frame rates or rich metadata, and older AVIs often have broken indexes that make seeking awkward. MKV is an open, robust container that handles all of these and is the default choice for many home-media setups.

Video is encoded with libx264 at CRF 23 using the veryfast preset, and audio is encoded as AAC. Unlike the MP4 and MOV tools, the pixel format is not forced, so the encoder follows the source; for typical Xvid or DivX files that is standard 4:2:0 colour.

Limitations

  • Unusual sources such as 4:2:2 DV may produce an H.264 profile that some TVs and streaming sticks cannot decode; use AVI to MP4 if playback fails.
  • Interlaced footage is not deinterlaced.
  • Separate subtitle files are not merged into the MKV.

Frequently asked questions

Will Plex or Kodi play the MKV?

Yes. H.264 with AAC in Matroska is one of the most widely supported combinations for media servers and players.

Is MKV better than MP4 for this?

For a home media library MKV is excellent. For phones, iPhones and social sharing, MP4 is more convenient.

Does the MKV lose quality?

There is a small loss from re-encoding, but CRF 23 H.264 usually looks as good as or better than old Xvid at a smaller size.

Do the AVI files get uploaded?

No. Conversion runs entirely inside the browser tab on your computer.
