How to use AVI to MP3

  1. Choose one or more .avi files.
  2. Press Convert to MP3.
  3. Wait while the audio stream is decoded and re-encoded.
  4. Download your MP3 files or a ZIP of all of them.

What audio hides inside AVI files

AVI soundtracks vary widely: DivX and Xvid downloads usually carry MP3 or AC-3, DV camcorder files hold uncompressed PCM, and old digital cameras often stored ADPCM or PCM mono. FFmpeg decodes whichever is present and encodes it with LAME at VBR quality 2, so the result has a consistent, high-quality bitrate.

For mono camera recordings the MP3 stays mono, which keeps the file small. Even when the AVI already contains MP3, the audio is re-encoded rather than copied, so a near-identical quality copy is produced at around 190 kbps.

Limitations

  • Re-encoding an AVI that already has MP3 audio adds a second lossy generation, though at this quality it is rarely audible.
  • AVIs with damaged indexes or interrupted downloads may lose sound towards the end or fail.
  • Old cameras recorded at low sample rates, so the MP3 cannot sound better than that source.

Frequently asked questions

Can it extract audio from a DV camcorder AVI?

Yes. DV files carry PCM audio, which converts cleanly; just expect the AVI itself to be large and slow to read.

Why is the audio mono?

Many old cameras recorded a single channel. The tool keeps the source channel count, so mono stays mono.

Can I keep the original MP3 without re-encoding?

Not with this tool; it always encodes a new MP3 at VBR quality 2.

Do my AVI files leave my computer?

No. They are read and converted inside the browser tab.
