How to use Convert PDF to Grayscale

  1. Upload one or more colour PDFs.
  2. Choose Resolution; Good (144 dpi) is selected by default.
  3. Adjust JPEG quality (80 by default) for sharper or smaller output.
  4. Click Convert to grayscale and download the -grayscale.pdf file.

How the colour is removed

Each page is rendered to a canvas, passed through a grayscale filter and stored as a JPEG in a new PDF that keeps the original page dimensions. Reds, blues and highlights become shades of grey, so coloured text stays visible instead of disappearing as it might with a pure black-and-white threshold.

Grayscale copies save ink when printing study material at a local shop, and some application forms ask for scanned documents in black and white. Removing colour also tends to trim the file size a little.

Limitations

  • Because pages become images, text can no longer be selected, searched or copied.
  • Output size depends on resolution; a text-only PDF may grow in size.
  • Light-coloured text can turn into pale grey and become harder to read.

Frequently asked questions

Is this true black and white or grey?

Grey. Colours map to 256 shades of grey rather than being forced to pure black or white.

Can I make it smaller as well?

Yes. Lower the Resolution and JPEG quality, or use Compress PDF with its grayscale option ticked.

Will anyone else see my document?

No. The conversion runs on your device and there is no server copy.
