How to use MKV to GIF

  1. Choose a .mkv file and use the preview to locate the scene.
  2. Type the Start time in seconds and how many seconds the GIF should last (Duration, default 5).
  3. Set FPS and Width; 12 fps and 480 px are the defaults.
  4. Press Make GIF, then download the animation.

From an MKV scene to an animated GIF

Only the section you specify is decoded: FFmpeg seeks to the start time before reading, so making a GIF from minute 40 of a long recording does not require decoding the whole file. The frames are thinned to your FPS, resized with the Lanczos filter, and mapped to a 128-colour palette built from that very scene.

MKV is the default output for OBS Studio, so gamers and teachers who record with it can clip highlights without first converting to MP4. Subtitles inside the MKV are not drawn onto the GIF, so add captions in an editor if you need them.

Limitations

  • Subtitle tracks are ignored; text will not appear on the GIF.
  • Dark, high-contrast scenes can show banding or dithering because of the limited palette.
  • Very wide GIFs or long durations produce files too large for most chat apps.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to convert the MKV to MP4 first?

No. The tool reads MKV directly, whatever codec is inside, as long as FFmpeg can decode it.

Can I start the GIF at 12:30 in the video?

Yes. Enter 750 seconds, or type 12:30, since the field accepts colon format too.

What size will the GIF be?

It depends on motion and colour. A five-second, 480 px, 12 fps GIF typically comes to a few megabytes.

Does the MKV get uploaded?

No. The scene is decoded and turned into a GIF on your device.
