Making MKV editable on a Mac
Matroska is common for screen recordings from OBS, downloads and archived footage, but Apple's apps reject the container itself even when the codec inside is H.264. Converting decodes the stream and encodes fresh H.264 at CRF 23 in yuv420p, with AAC audio, so the clip drops straight into an iMovie timeline.
If you record with OBS in MKV to avoid losing a recording on a crash, this is a convenient last step before editing. Keep the original MKV until you have checked the MOV, since this is a lossy re-encode.
Limitations
- Multiple audio tracks, such as separate microphone and desktop audio from OBS, are reduced to one; FFmpeg chooses which.
- Image-based subtitles (PGS or VobSub) can cause the conversion to fail, as MOV supports only text subtitles.
- Chapters and attachments such as embedded fonts are not preserved.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't iMovie import my MKV?
Apple's apps do not support the Matroska container, regardless of the codec inside. A MOV or MP4 is required.
I recorded in OBS with two audio tracks. What happens?
Only one track is kept. If you need both, remux or mix them in OBS or another editor before converting.
Is MOV or MP4 better for Final Cut?
Both import fine when they contain H.264. Pick MOV if your project or team standard is QuickTime.
Does conversion happen on your servers?
There are no servers involved. The MKV is converted on your own Mac by the in-browser engine.
