MOV to AVI
Convert QuickTime MOV recordings, including HEVC clips from recent iPhones, into an AVI that older Windows programs and USB media players can read.
✓ No upload · ✓ No sign-up · ✓ No watermark
How to use MOV to AVI
- Choose one or more .mov files.
- Press Convert to AVI; nothing else needs setting.
- Keep the page open while the MOV is decoded and re-encoded. HEVC and 4K sources are the slowest.
- Download the AVI files or a combined ZIP.
From Apple's container to a legacy one
A MOV straight off an iPhone usually holds HEVC or H.264 video with AAC sound, often in 4K and sometimes HDR. Older AVI players understand none of that. The tool decodes the MOV and writes MPEG-4 Part 2 video at quantiser 5 with MP3 audio at LAME VBR level 4, a combination familiar to DivX-era hardware.
Because iPhone footage is high resolution, consider resizing to 720p or 480p first if the AVI is for an old player. That also makes the conversion faster, since the encoder has fewer pixels to process.
Limitations
- HDR and 10-bit iPhone footage loses its wide colour range and may look washed out.
- Resolution is not reduced automatically, so a 4K MOV becomes a very large 4K AVI that old devices will not decode.
- Portrait clips rely on rotation metadata; most players handle the result, but very old ones may show it sideways.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert MOV to AVI and not to MP4?
Only when the target needs AVI. For modern PCs and phones, MOV to MP4 gives a smaller, more compatible file.
My iPhone video is in HEVC. Will this still work?
Yes, FFmpeg decodes HEVC in the browser. It is just slower than H.264 sources.
What audio format does the AVI use?
MP3, encoded with LAME at variable bitrate quality 4, which is roughly 165 kbps.
Are my iPhone clips uploaded?
No. The conversion is local to your browser, so personal videos stay on your device.
