MOV to MP3

Keep only the audio from a QuickTime MOV, whether it is a class you filmed on your iPhone, a speech or a music performance. The result is a portable MP3 that plays on anything.

How to use MOV to MP3

  1. Choose one or more .mov files.
  2. Press Convert to MP3; the quality setting is preset.
  3. Wait briefly; the video is skipped, so this is faster than a video conversion.
  4. Download each MP3 or the full set as a ZIP.

Getting audio out of a QuickTime file

iPhone and Mac MOV recordings normally carry AAC audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz. The tool ignores the picture, decodes that AAC and encodes MP3 with LAME at VBR quality 2, which averages roughly 190 kbps. Because the video stream is never decoded, even large 4K HEVC clips convert quickly.

This is a quick way to turn a filmed lecture or interview into something you can listen to while commuting, or to share a recorded performance with someone who only needs the sound. Spatial or multichannel audio from newer iPhones is reduced to stereo for MP3.

Limitations

  • The bitrate cannot be changed; for smaller speech files, run the MP3 through an audio bitrate tool afterwards.
  • A MOV without an audio track, such as some screen recordings with sound disabled, will fail.
  • Metadata such as location and recording date is not copied into the MP3.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work with iPhone HEVC videos?

Yes. Only the audio is decoded, so the HEVC video codec does not matter.

Can I get M4A instead of MP3?

This tool outputs MP3 only. MP3 is the more universally accepted choice for older players and upload forms.

Why is my Mac screen recording failing?

If the recording was made without a microphone or system audio, the MOV has no sound to extract.

Is the MOV uploaded to convert it?

No. Your clip is processed by FFmpeg inside the browser on your own device.
