How to use MOV to WAV

  1. Choose one or more .mov files.
  2. Press Convert to WAV.
  3. Wait for the quick audio-only conversion to finish.
  4. Download the WAV files, or zip them with Download all.

Uncompressed sound from camera footage

The tool drops the video and decodes the MOV's audio, usually AAC on iPhones, though some cameras record linear PCM directly. It writes 16-bit PCM WAV keeping the source sample rate and channel layout, so a 48 kHz stereo recording stays 48 kHz stereo.

Videographers who record separate sound often need the camera's scratch audio as WAV for syncing, and podcasters who film an episode on a phone may want the audio for cleanup. Expect about 11 MB per minute for 48 kHz stereo.

Limitations

  • Audio recorded at 24-bit by a camera is saved as 16-bit, which is ample for most editing but not a perfect copy.
  • WAV files are large; an hour of stereo audio is over half a gigabyte.
  • Timecode and camera metadata are not written into the WAV.

Frequently asked questions

Does GarageBand open the WAV?

Yes. 16-bit PCM WAV imports into GarageBand, Logic, Audacity and practically any audio editor.

Why not extract MP3 instead?

MP3 is smaller but adds compression. WAV is better if you plan to edit, apply noise reduction or re-export later.

Will multichannel audio be kept?

Yes. PCM WAV can hold more than two channels, and the source channel count is not changed.

Is the MOV processed online?

Only within this web page. The file stays on your machine and is not uploaded.
