MP4 to AVI
Make an AVI for hardware and software that predates MP4, such as DivX-certified DVD players, older TVs with USB playback and legacy Windows programs. Video uses the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec those devices understand.

How to use MP4 to AVI
- Choose one or more .mp4 files.
- Press Convert to AVI; the legacy-friendly settings are built in.
- Wait for the progress bar to finish for each file.
- Download the AVI files singly or in a ZIP, then copy them to your USB drive or disc.
What goes inside the AVI
Video is encoded with FFmpeg's mpeg4 encoder, the same MPEG-4 Part 2 family as DivX and Xvid, at a fixed quantiser of 5, a mid-high quality level. Audio becomes MP3 through LAME at VBR quality 4, roughly 165 kbps on average. This pairing is what most AVI-capable players from the 2000s expect.
MPEG-4 Part 2 is less efficient than the H.264 inside your MP4, so the AVI is often larger for similar quality. Convert only when a target device or program really needs AVI, for example an older USB media player at home or a training lab still running legacy video software.
Limitations
- FFmpeg labels the video with the FMP4 code; some standalone players look for an XVID or DIVX tag and may refuse the file.
- High-resolution sources stay at their original size, and many old players cannot handle anything above standard definition or 720p.
- Subtitles, chapters and extra audio tracks are not carried over.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my AVI larger than the MP4?
MPEG-4 Part 2 needs more bits than H.264 to look as good. A larger file is normal for this conversion.
Will a DivX DVD player play it?
Often, if the resolution is within the player's limits. Some models are picky about the codec tag, so test one file before converting a whole collection.
Can I choose H.264 inside AVI?
Not here. AVI is meant for legacy players, and those usually need MPEG-4 Part 2.
Where does the encoding happen?
In your own browser. The MP4 is not uploaded.
