MP4 to MOV
Create a .mov copy of an MP4 when a Mac workflow, a client brief or an editing template specifically asks for QuickTime files. The video is re-encoded to 8-bit H.264 with AAC sound.

How to use MP4 to MOV
- Choose one or more .mp4 files.
- Press Convert to MOV; there are no options to adjust.
- Allow the encode to run; the percentage updates as each file progresses.
- Download the MOV, or every result as one ZIP.
Should you convert MP4 to MOV?
MP4 and MOV are close relatives: MP4 was derived from Apple's QuickTime format, and both commonly hold H.264 with AAC. Macs, iPhones and iPads already play most MP4 files, so converting matters mainly when software or a submission rule insists on the .mov extension or a QuickTime container.
The tool encodes with libx264 at CRF 23, the veryfast preset and yuv420p pixel format, and converts the audio to AAC at FFmpeg's default bitrate. Unlike the MP4 tools, no faststart flag is added, which makes no difference for editing or local playback.
Limitations
- The video is re-encoded, not just rewrapped, so there is a small generation loss and it takes as long as a full encode.
- It does not produce ProRes or other editing codecs; the MOV still contains H.264.
- Large 4K MP4s may be too much for browser memory, particularly on phones and tablets.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MOV look better than the MP4?
No. It cannot exceed the source's quality; at CRF 23 it should look almost the same.
Can Windows play the MOV?
Usually yes, because it contains standard H.264 and AAC. Windows Media Player, Films and TV, and VLC open such files.
Why is the file size different from the original?
The re-encode at CRF 23 sets its own bitrate based on the picture, so the size can go up or down.
Is my MP4 processed on a server?
No. It is converted within this page on your device, with no upload step.
