How to use MP4 to OGG
- Choose one or more .mp4 files.
- Press Convert to OGG; the Vorbis quality is preset.
- Wait for the audio to be decoded and re-encoded.
- Save each .ogg file, or grab them all in one ZIP.
When Ogg Vorbis makes sense
The video stream is dropped and the AAC audio is re-encoded with libvorbis at quality level 5, a variable-bitrate setting that usually averages around 160 kbps. Vorbis at this level sounds comparable to a good MP3 while being completely free of licensing, which is why engines such as Godot and Unity and many Linux applications prefer it.
Developers pulling music or sound effects from a video, modders preparing game assets and contributors to open-content sites are the main audience. For everyday listening on phones and in cars, MP3 remains more compatible.
Limitations
- Apple devices have historically had patchy Ogg support, so OGG may not play in some iPhone and Mac apps.
- Quality is fixed at Vorbis level 5; there is no Opus option here.
- Converting AAC to Vorbis is a second lossy step, so keep the original MP4 for archiving.
Frequently asked questions
Is OGG the same as Vorbis?
Ogg is the container and Vorbis the codec inside it. Ogg can also hold Opus or FLAC, but this tool writes Vorbis.
What bitrate does quality 5 give?
It is variable, typically about 160 kbps for stereo music, lower for speech.
Will an OGG file play on Android and in Chrome?
Yes. Android, Chrome, Firefox and Edge play Ogg Vorbis natively.
Is my MP4 uploaded to make the OGG?
No. The Vorbis encoder runs in your browser, so the video stays local.
