WebM to MOV

Edit a WebM recording on a Mac. Browser-based recorders and many extensions save WebM, which Apple's editing apps cannot import, so the tool turns it into an H.264 MOV.

How to use WebM to MOV

  1. Choose one or more .webm files.
  2. Press Convert to MOV.
  3. Wait for each recording to be re-encoded; the status shows a percentage.
  4. Download the MOV files and drag them into iMovie, Final Cut or Keynote.

From web video to an editable QuickTime file

WebM recordings normally contain VP8 or VP9 video with Opus audio. Safari can play many of them, yet QuickTime Player, iMovie and Final Cut do not accept the format for editing. The tool decodes the stream and writes 8-bit H.264 at CRF 23 with AAC audio in a MOV wrapper.

This helps teachers turning a recorded browser lesson into a polished video, students preparing a presentation demo, and anyone who used an online meeting or screen recorder that only offers WebM downloads.

Limitations

  • Browser recordings often have a variable frame rate; the MOV keeps those timestamps, and a few editors may show slight audio drift on very long clips.
  • Alpha transparency from VP9 WebM is discarded.
  • Recordings that lack a duration header may show an unmoving progress bar until the encode completes.

Frequently asked questions

Does QuickTime Player open WebM files?

Generally not. Safari may play them, but QuickTime and Apple's editing apps expect MOV or MP4.

Will text in my screen recording stay sharp?

CRF 23 keeps on-screen text readable in most recordings. Fine small text may soften slightly compared with the original.

Should I pick MOV or MP4?

Either works on a Mac. MP4 is more universal if you will also share the file with Windows or Android users.

Is the recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The WebM is converted locally, which matters when recordings show private screens or meetings.
