WebM to MP3

Turn the Opus or Vorbis sound in a WebM file into MP3, the format almost every device and form accepts. It is ideal for browser recordings, web downloads and voice captures saved as WebM.

How to use WebM to MP3

  1. Choose one or more .webm files.
  2. Press Convert to MP3.
  3. Wait briefly while the soundtrack is converted; the video is ignored.
  4. Download the MP3s or all of them as a ZIP.

Opus and Vorbis versus MP3

WebM audio is Opus in most recent recordings and Vorbis in older ones. Both are efficient open codecs, but car stereos, some Bluetooth speakers and many upload forms recognise only MP3. The tool decodes the WebM's audio and encodes MP3 with LAME at VBR quality 2, around 190 kbps on average.

Opus normally runs at 48 kHz, and that sample rate is kept in the MP3. Typical uses are saving the audio from a browser-recorded meeting, interview or lesson, or converting a voice recording made with a web app so it can be attached to an email or uploaded.

Limitations

  • Opus is often recorded at low bitrates for voice; the MP3 will be larger without sounding any better.
  • A WebM made without a microphone track has no audio to extract and the job will fail.
  • Browser recordings missing duration information may show irregular progress.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the MP3 larger than my WebM?

Opus at 32–64 kbps is very compact. The MP3 is encoded at a high VBR quality, so it can be bigger while holding the same sound.

Can I convert a WebM voice recording?

Yes, as long as the .webm file has an audio stream. Audio-only WebM files work as well.

Does it work for WebM files downloaded from the web?

Yes, if they are ordinary WebM files with Opus or Vorbis audio and are not protected by DRM.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The WebM is converted locally inside this page.
