How to use CSV to XML Converter

  1. Drop a .csv, .tsv or .txt file into the box (multiple files are fine).
  2. Click Convert to XML.
  3. Copy or download the generated XML.

Structure of the output

The header line supplies element names. Because XML tags cannot contain spaces or most punctuation, a heading such as "Date of Birth" becomes Date_of_Birth, and names starting with a number get a leading underscore. Values are escaped so ampersands and angle brackets do not break the document, and each file begins with an XML declaration in UTF-8.

Handy for importing spreadsheet data into software that expects XML, for creating test fixtures, or for quick data exchange with older enterprise systems.

Limitations

  • The root and row element names are fixed as rows and row; rename them in a text editor if your system needs different tags.
  • Leading zeros, + signs and long digit strings are kept exactly as written.
  • All columns become child elements; attributes cannot be produced from CSV here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the element names?

Column headings become element names automatically. The rows and row wrappers are fixed.

What if a heading has spaces or symbols?

Unsafe characters are replaced with underscores so the XML stays valid.

Are empty cells kept?

Yes, they appear as empty elements so every row has the same set of tags.

Does the CSV leave my computer?

No, conversion happens inside the page.
