JSON to XML Converter
Generate well-formed, indented XML from any JSON file, with a root element name you choose. Keys beginning with @ are written as attributes, so XML exported by our XML to JSON tool converts back cleanly.

How to use JSON to XML Converter
- Drop one or more .json files into the upload area.
- Type a Root element name, or keep the default root.
- Click Convert to XML.
- Copy the XML from the result box or download the .xml file.
How JSON maps to XML
Each object key becomes a child element, and each item in an array repeats the element under the same name. If the whole file is an array, its items are written as repeated item elements inside your root. Special characters (<, >, &, quotes) are escaped, and the file starts with an XML declaration specifying UTF-8.
Element names must follow XML rules, so characters such as spaces or slashes in keys are replaced with underscores, and a key starting with a digit gets a leading underscore. This suits systems, payroll or e-filing utilities and older APIs that only accept XML.
Limitations
- Renamed keys (for example "first name" to first_name) do not map back automatically.
- null values are written as empty elements; there is no xsi:nil or schema support.
- Only the outermost wrapper uses your root name; when a file has a single top-level key, that key sits inside the root as its own element.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to an array at the top level?
Each array item becomes an element called item, placed inside the root you named.
How do I create XML attributes?
Prefix the key with @, for example {"@id": 5}, and it becomes id="5" on the parent element. A #text key sets the element's text.
Is the XML validated against a schema?
No. The output is well-formed XML, but checking it against an XSD is up to the receiving system.
Is my JSON uploaded?
It is not. Conversion is done by script running in your browser.
