M4A to MP3 Converter
Convert M4A files from iPhone voice memos, WhatsApp exports or iTunes into MP3, the format almost every player, car stereo and upload form accepts. Encoding uses the LAME encoder in variable-bitrate mode, so quiet passages take fewer bits and busy music gets more.

How to use M4A to MP3 Converter
- Click the drop zone or drag one or more .m4a files onto it.
- Play the first file in the preview player to confirm it is the right recording.
- Press Convert to MP3 and wait while the progress bar shows each file being encoded.
- Download each MP3, or use Download all (ZIP) when you converted several.
What happens to your M4A audio
M4A is an MPEG-4 container that usually holds AAC, sometimes Apple Lossless (ALAC). The tool decodes whichever is inside and re-encodes it with libmp3lame at quality setting 2 (-q:a 2), which typically averages 170–210 kbps. Video tracks such as cover art are dropped with -vn.
AAC to MP3 is a lossy-to-lossy step, so the copy can never sound better than the original; at this quality most listeners will not hear a difference. It suits lecture recordings, interview clips and podcasts that must go to an older device or a portal that only accepts MP3.
Limitations
- The bitrate is fixed at VBR quality 2; there is no setting for 128 kbps or 320 kbps here. Use Compress Audio afterwards if you need a smaller file.
- Tags such as title, artist and album art may not carry over to the MP3.
- DRM-protected purchases from the old iTunes Store (.m4p) cannot be decoded.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my MP3 a different size from the M4A?
The MP3 is encoded at variable bitrate around 190 kbps. A voice memo recorded at 64 kbps will grow, while a 256 kbps iTunes track will usually shrink.
Can I convert Apple Lossless M4A files?
Yes. FFmpeg decodes ALAC inside an M4A container, and the result is a normal lossy MP3.
Does the recording leave my device?
No. The FFmpeg engine runs inside the browser tab; only the engine itself (around 30 MB) is downloaded, once, on first use.
