How to use M4A to WAV Converter

  1. Add your .m4a files using the drop zone (several are allowed).
  2. Check the first one in the built-in audio preview.
  3. Click Convert to WAV; the engine loads on the first run and then processes each file.
  4. Save the WAV files individually or as a single ZIP.

Why convert M4A to WAV

The AAC (or ALAC) stream inside the M4A is decoded and written as signed 16-bit little-endian PCM (pcm_s16le). The sample rate and channel count stay as they were, so a 48 kHz stereo memo remains 48 kHz stereo. Nothing is compressed, which makes the file easy for editors to cut and process without another generation of loss.

Expect a big jump in size: CD-quality stereo PCM runs at about 1,411 kbps, roughly 10 MB per minute. It is the right choice when you plan to edit, clean noise or feed a speech-to-text tool, and the wrong choice for sharing over WhatsApp or email.

Limitations

  • Converting to WAV does not restore detail that AAC encoding removed; it only stops further loss.
  • Long recordings become very large WAV files, and files over roughly 500 MB can exhaust browser memory.
  • 24-bit or 32-bit output is not offered; output is always 16-bit.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WAV sound better than my M4A?

No. It will sound the same. WAV simply stores the decoded audio without compression, which helps editing but adds no quality.

What sample rate does the WAV use?

The same one as the source. FFmpeg keeps the original rate and channels because the tool does not resample.

Is anything sent to a server?

Your audio is processed by FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside this tab, so it stays on your computer or phone.
