How to use Mute Video

1. Choose one or several videos; the first plays in the preview so you can confirm it is the right clip.
2. There are no settings: press Mute.
3. Download the silent copy, saved with a -muted suffix, or grab all of them in one ZIP.

Why muting is nearly instant

The command used is simply -an with -c:v copy. FFmpeg drops every audio stream and writes the existing video packets into a new file without decoding them. Because nothing is recompressed, a large 1080p recording is usually muted in about the time it takes your browser to read it into memory.

This is handy for silent screen demos, slide-style project videos you plan to narrate later, CCTV or dashcam clips you need to share without conversations in the background, and social posts where a platform flags the music. The file also gets slightly smaller, since the audio data is gone.

Limitations

• All audio is removed; you cannot lower the volume or keep one of several language tracks here.
• MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM keep their container. AVI, FLV, WMV, 3GP and M4V inputs are written as MP4, and an old codec that MP4 cannot hold will make the job fail.
• Subtitle tracks are not guaranteed to survive in the muted copy.

Frequently asked questions

Does muting reduce video quality?

No. The picture stream is copied, not re-encoded, so every frame is identical to the original.

Can I replace the sound with music?

Not with this tool. It only removes audio. You would need an editor to add a new soundtrack afterwards.

Why did my AVI come back as an MP4?

The muted copy is written as MP4 for anything other than MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, which also makes it easier to play on phones.

Is a copy of my clip kept online?

There is no server step at all. The audio is stripped inside your browser and the file never leaves your device.
