Resize Video

Pick a target height and the width follows automatically, so a phone clip shrinks to 720p or 480p without stretching. The audio track is passed through unchanged.

How to use Resize Video

  1. Choose one or more videos; MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, M4V, 3GP, FLV and WMV are accepted.
  2. Open the Resolution menu and pick 4K (2160p), 1080p, 720p (the default), 480p, 360p or 240p.
  3. Press Resize and let the progress bar finish.
  4. Download the result, named with the height you chose, for example lecture-480p.mp4.

How the resize keeps the shape right

The scale filter is given the new height and a width of -2, which tells FFmpeg to calculate the width from the original aspect ratio and round it to an even number, as H.264 requires. A 16:9 clip at 720p becomes 1280×720, while a vertical 9:16 reel becomes 406×720. The video is re-encoded with x264 at CRF 23 and the veryfast preset.

Lowering resolution is the most predictable way to make a video lighter for slow connections, older laptops or upload forms with pixel limits. The audio is copied rather than recompressed, so speech and music keep their original quality and the job finishes a little sooner.

Limitations

  • The chosen height is applied even if it is larger than the source, so picking 1080p for a 480p file upscales it and only adds size, not detail.
  • MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM inputs keep their container (WebM is re-encoded to VP8 with Vorbis audio); everything else is saved as MP4. Audio is re-encoded so it always fits the output.
  • iPhone HDR clips are not tone-mapped, and the output is converted to 8-bit 4:2:0 video so that older players can open it.

Frequently asked questions

Will resizing stretch or crop my video?

No. Only the height is fixed; the width is worked out from the original proportions, so nothing is cropped or squashed.

Does it make the file smaller too?

Usually, when you go down in resolution. If you mainly need a smaller file, the Compress Video tool also lets you lower CRF and audio bitrate.

Can I resize a portrait phone video?

Yes. The height you pick becomes the long side and the width is calculated, so a 1080×1920 clip at 720p comes out about 406×720.
