Video to WebP

Create a looping animated WebP, the lighter alternative to GIF that keeps thousands of colours. It suits website banners, product demos and documentation where file size matters.

How to use Video to WebP

  1. Choose a video file; the first frame appears in the preview.
  2. Set FPS (12 by default) and Width (480 px by default); the height is scaled to match.
  3. Enter a Start second and, optionally, a Duration. Leave Duration blank to convert the whole video.
  4. Press Make WebP and download the animation.

WebP animation compared with GIF

Animated WebP stores frames with lossy VP8-style compression instead of GIF's 256-colour LZW, so photos, gradients and faces look natural and the file is usually much smaller. Here the libwebp encoder runs at quality 70, frames are resampled to your chosen rate and width, any audio is discarded and the animation loops endlessly.

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (version 14 onwards) display animated WebP, which makes it a good choice for blogs, landing pages and help articles. GIF still has the edge for compatibility with older email clients and some messaging apps, so check where the file will be posted.

Limitations

  • Duration is blank by default, meaning the full video is converted; long inputs can take a long time and produce a heavy file, so set a range.
  • Quality is fixed at 70 and there is no lossless option.
  • Some upload forms and older programs do not accept WebP, or treat it as a still image.

Frequently asked questions

Is animated WebP smaller than GIF?

For real-world footage, usually by a wide margin, because it is not limited to a 256-colour palette and uses better compression.

Does the WebP keep sound?

No. Animated WebP is an image format, so audio is removed with the -an option.

Can I convert only part of the video?

Yes. Put the start time in seconds in Start and the clip length in Duration, for example 12 and 6 for seconds 12 to 18.

Do I need to upload the clip?

No. The WebP is encoded on your own machine by the in-browser FFmpeg engine.
