How to use AAC to M4R Ringtone Converter
- If your clip is longer than about 30 seconds, cut it first with the Trim Audio tool (an .aac stays .aac after trimming).
- Drop the .aac file here and check it in the preview.
- Click Convert to M4R.
- Download the .m4r and add it to the iPhone through Finder on a Mac or iTunes/Apple Devices on Windows.
How an M4R ringtone is built
An M4R is essentially an M4A with a different extension: AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. The tool runs -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f ipod, so the output uses the iPod-compatible MP4 flavour Apple devices expect, at a bitrate that sounds clean through a phone speaker.
This converter does not shorten anything. Apple's GarageBand cuts ringtones down to 30 seconds, and files much longer than that may never appear in the ringtone list, so a short, well-chosen section works best. Fade-ins and silence at the start waste precious seconds.
Limitations
- No duration cap or automatic trimming is applied; long files convert but may not work as ringtones.
- The file still has to be transferred to the iPhone with a computer or GarageBand; a browser cannot install ringtones.
- Only .aac input is accepted on this page.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
Keep it to 30 seconds or less. Apple's own GarageBand export trims longer clips to 30 seconds, and longer files are often ignored by the ringtone picker.
Why is it re-encoded instead of just renamed?
Re-encoding at 192 kbps AAC with the ipod muxer guarantees a clean MP4 container, even when the source was a raw ADTS stream.
Can Android phones use the M4R?
Many Android phones can play it, but MP3 or OGG are the usual choices there.
Is my clip sent anywhere?
No. The ringtone is built locally by FFmpeg in your browser.
