BMP to JPG Converter

BMP files from scanners, old Paint drawings and legacy software are uncompressed and often several megabytes each. This page re-encodes them as JPG, usually a small fraction of the original size, with a quality slider you control.

How to use BMP to JPG Converter

  1. Add one or more .bmp files by dragging them in or browsing.
  2. Set the Quality slider (default 90); lower values give smaller files with more compression artefacts.
  3. Optionally pick a background colour, used only if the bitmap has transparent pixels.
  4. Press Convert to JPG and download each file, or all of them as a ZIP.

Why BMP files shrink so much as JPG

A BMP normally stores every pixel as raw colour values with no compression, so a 1920 × 1080 image is around 6 MB whatever it shows. JPG uses lossy compression tuned to human vision, discarding detail you are unlikely to notice. At quality 85 to 90, photos and scanned pages usually look unchanged while the file becomes many times lighter.

That matters when a portal caps upload size, an email bounces for being too large, or a folder of old scans is eating disk space. For screenshots of text or line drawings, JPG can leave faint halos around sharp edges; if that bothers you, choose PNG instead.

Limitations

  • JPG is lossy: some fine detail is discarded and cannot be recovered later.
  • JPG has no transparency, so any transparent BMP pixels are filled with the chosen background colour.
  • Unusual BMP variants that your browser cannot decode (some RLE or 16-bit types) will show a read error.

Frequently asked questions

What quality setting should I use?

90 is a safe default for photos and scans. Drop to 70–80 if you need a much smaller file, and check the preview for blockiness around edges.

Can I convert many BMP files together?

Yes. Add several at once; each is converted in turn and a Download all (ZIP) button appears when there is more than one result.

Is the original BMP changed?

No. A new JPG is created; the BMP on your device is left exactly as it was.
