BMP to PNG Converter
Change old Windows bitmaps into PNG without losing a single pixel. PNG compresses losslessly, so the picture stays identical while the file typically gets much smaller and opens everywhere.

How to use BMP to PNG Converter
- Drag your .bmp files into the drop zone or tap to choose them.
- Press Convert to PNG; no quality setting is needed because PNG is lossless.
- Save each PNG, or grab them together with Download all (ZIP).
When PNG is the better target
Both BMP and PNG keep exact pixel values, but PNG applies lossless compression on top. Large flat areas of colour, as in diagrams, screenshots, maps and Paint drawings, compress extremely well, sometimes to a tenth of the bitmap size. Busy photographs shrink less, because there is less repetition for the compressor to exploit.
Choose PNG over JPG when the image contains text, sharp lines or a logo, since nothing is blurred or smeared. It is also the safer choice if you plan to edit the image again later, because repeated saves never degrade it the way repeated JPG saves can.
Limitations
- For full-colour photographs the PNG may still be large; JPG will be far smaller if exact pixels are not essential.
- Rare BMP encodings that the browser's image decoder does not understand cannot be converted.
- Very large bitmaps can strain memory on low-end phones, since the whole image is decoded at once.
Frequently asked questions
Will the PNG look exactly like my BMP?
Yes. The conversion is lossless, so every pixel keeps its original colour.
Why is my PNG not much smaller?
Photographic content with lots of noise and gradients does not compress well losslessly. Try the BMP to JPG page if a smaller file matters more than perfect fidelity.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only to load this page. The decoding and PNG encoding happen in your browser, so your bitmaps are not transferred anywhere.
