How to use GIF to AVIF Converter
- Add .gif files.
- Pick a Quality value; 90 is preset.
- Click Convert to AVIF and wait for the encoder.
- Download the AVIF stills individually or as a ZIP.
What a GIF gains and loses as AVIF
GIF is limited to 256 colours and uses dated LZW compression, so even simple static graphics can be surprisingly heavy. AVIF can store full colour and an alpha channel with modern compression, so a static GIF banner or icon usually becomes much smaller. The tool draws the GIF onto a canvas and encodes AVIF, with transparent pixels carried over.
The important caveat is motion. Although AVIF has an animated variant, this converter writes a single still image, taking whichever frame the browser draws first, usually the opening one. Use it for static GIFs or when you only need a still thumbnail; keep the original if the animation matters.
Limitations
- Animated GIFs lose their animation; only one frame is kept.
- Colours stay limited to what the GIF palette held; AVIF cannot add detail.
- Some apps and older browsers cannot display AVIF.
Frequently asked questions
Does it make an animated AVIF?
No. The output is a single still frame from the GIF.
Will colours improve?
They will match the GIF. AVIF can store more colours, but the GIF's palette limits what is there.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. GIF transparency is preserved in the AVIF output.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The GIF is decoded and AVIF encoded in your browser.
