Why PNG is a natural successor to GIF

PNG was created in the 1990s partly as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and it does everything a still GIF does, plus full colour and smooth alpha transparency. Converting a GIF to PNG is lossless: every palette colour and every transparent pixel is reproduced exactly. You also gain the freedom to edit the image later with millions of colours rather than 256.

Pixel artists, teachers reusing old diagrams and anyone tidying a folder of legacy GIF icons will find this useful. The one catch is animation. This tool draws the GIF onto a canvas, which holds a single picture, so an animated GIF produces one PNG of a single frame rather than a sequence.

Limitations

  • Only one frame is exported from an animated GIF.
  • PNG files may be a little larger than the GIF for very simple images.
  • There is no option to upscale small pixel art; dimensions are unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Is GIF to PNG lossless?

Yes. PNG can represent every GIF colour and transparency exactly, so nothing is lost.

Can I get all frames of my animated GIF as PNGs?

Not here. The converter outputs one still per GIF file.

Will my pixel art get blurry?

No. Pixel dimensions are unchanged and no smoothing is applied during a straight conversion.

Does my GIF stay on my computer?

Yes. It is read and converted by your browser locally.
