How to use HEIC to AVIF Converter

  1. Choose .heic or .heif photos.
  2. Set Quality between 10 and 100 (90 by default).
  3. Click Convert to AVIF; the first run loads a WebAssembly encoder.
  4. Download the AVIF files or the ZIP.

Why go from HEIC to AVIF

HEIC wraps HEVC-compressed images, a codec with licensing complications, which is one reason browsers have been slow to support it. AVIF uses the royalty-free AV1 codec and achieves comparable or better compression, and current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can display it. Converting lets you keep small file sizes while making the photos usable on the web.

The page decodes HEIC with heic2any and then encodes AVIF. If your browser cannot produce AVIF from a canvas, the tool loads a WebAssembly AVIF encoder of roughly 2.6 MB, which is why the status line mentions a short wait. Encoding AVIF is compute-heavy, so large photos may take several seconds each, especially on phones.

Limitations

  • AVIF encoding is slow compared with JPG or WebP; batches of large photos take patience.
  • Older browsers and some desktop apps cannot open AVIF files.
  • Only the first image of a multi-image HEIC is converted, and metadata is not kept.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF better than HEIC?

Compression is broadly similar. AVIF's advantage is wider, royalty-free support in browsers.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The AVIF encoder may need to download and start up before encoding begins.

Can I upload AVIF to exam forms?

Usually not. Such portals typically require JPG or JPEG, so use HEIC to JPG for that purpose.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Both the HEIC decoder and AVIF encoder run inside your browser.
