JPG to GIF Converter
Creates a single-frame GIF from a JPG photo. GIF is limited to a 256-colour palette, so this suits simple graphics and legacy systems more than detailed photography.

How to use JPG to GIF Converter
- Choose .jpg or .jpeg files, or drag them onto the drop zone.
- There are no settings: GIF has no quality slider.
- Click Convert to GIF.
- Save each GIF, or download the batch as a ZIP.
What happens to a photo saved as GIF
GIF dates from 1987 and stores at most 256 colours per image. A JPG photo can contain millions, so the tool runs a colour quantiser that picks the best 256-entry palette for each picture and maps every pixel to its nearest palette colour. Skies and skin tones can show banding as a result, while logos, charts and screenshots with few colours convert cleanly.
The output is a still image, not an animation; one JPG gives one frame. People typically need this for older forums, email signatures, or systems that list GIF as an accepted type. For everyday photo sharing, JPG or WebP will look better and weigh less, because GIF's LZW compression is lossless but inefficient on photographic detail.
Limitations
- Photographs often show colour banding after the 256-colour reduction.
- GIF files from photos can end up larger than the original JPG.
- Each JPG becomes a separate single-frame GIF; this tool does not assemble animations.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make an animated GIF from several JPGs?
Not with this tool. Each file is converted on its own into a still GIF.
Why do gradients look striped?
GIF can only hold 256 colours, so smooth gradients are approximated with fewer shades, which shows up as bands.
Is GIF smaller than JPG?
For photos, generally not. GIF compresses flat graphics well but handles camera images poorly.
Where is the work done?
Entirely in your browser. The JPG is decoded and the GIF encoded on your device.
