How to use PNG to AVIF Converter
- Drop your .png files into the upload box.
- Pick a Quality level; keep it high (85+) for text-heavy screenshots.
- Press Convert to AVIF and wait for encoding.
- Save the AVIF files or the ZIP.
From lossless PNG to compact AVIF
PNG is lossless, which is why screenshots and exported graphics can run to several megabytes. AVIF supports an alpha channel and strong lossy compression, so cut-out logos stay transparent while file size usually falls sharply. The tool reads each PNG into a canvas and encodes AVIF, using the browser's native encoder where available or a WebAssembly fallback otherwise.
Fine text and thin lines are where lossy formats struggle, so screenshots of notes or code benefit from higher quality settings. Large flat-colour areas compress superbly at almost any setting. Keep your original PNG archived, because AVIF output is lossy and some older programs still cannot open it.
Limitations
- AVIF output here is lossy; tiny text may soften at low quality.
- Encoding takes noticeably longer than PNG to WebP or JPG.
- Not every desktop app or upload form accepts .avif files.
Frequently asked questions
Does AVIF keep my transparent background?
Yes. AVIF supports alpha, so transparent areas from the PNG are retained.
Is AVIF or WebP better for my PNGs?
AVIF often yields smaller files; WebP encodes faster and has slightly broader legacy support. Try both and compare sizes.
Why is conversion slow?
AVIF compression is computationally heavy, and a WebAssembly encoder may need to load first.
Do my PNGs get uploaded?
No, encoding takes place in your browser.
