Moving graphics from PNG to GIF

PNG and GIF are both lossless, but they hold colour differently. PNG can store full 24-bit colour with an 8-bit alpha channel, allowing smooth anti-aliased edges and gentle drop shadows. GIF is palette-based with a maximum of 256 colours, and a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. The converter quantises each PNG to a fitting palette and writes a one-frame GIF.

Icons, simple logos, line diagrams and pixel art usually survive with little visible change, since they rarely use many colours. Images with soft glows or feathered cut-outs may pick up jagged or haloed edges where partial transparency gets forced to one extreme. If you need smooth transparency on the web, keeping the PNG or switching to WebP is usually better.

Limitations

  • Partial transparency is not supported by GIF, so soft edges and shadows can look rough.
  • Images with many colours, such as screenshots of photos, may band or dither poorly.
  • Output is a single still frame.

Frequently asked questions

Will my transparent PNG stay transparent?

GIF supports transparency only as fully clear or fully solid pixels, so the result is an approximation. Hard-edged cut-outs fare best.

Why do the edges of my logo look jagged?

PNG anti-aliasing uses semi-transparent pixels that GIF cannot store, so they are rounded to clear or opaque.

Is any quality lost?

Shapes are kept exactly, but colours beyond 256 are merged, so very colourful images can change.

Are my PNG files uploaded?

No. Everything is handled locally by your browser.
