PNG to ICO Converter
Convert a PNG logo or graphic into a Windows-style .ico file for use as a website favicon or desktop icon. Transparent areas stay transparent, and the icon is built on your own device.
✓ No upload · ✓ No sign-up · ✓ No watermark
How to use PNG to ICO Converter
- Drop one or more PNG files onto the upload area, or tap to browse.
- Press Convert to ICO; there are no settings to adjust for this format.
- Download the .ico file, or use Download all (ZIP) if you added several PNGs.
What goes into the ICO file
The converter draws your PNG onto a square canvas whose side is the larger of its width and height, capped at 256 pixels. A non-square logo is scaled to fit and centred, with transparent padding on the short sides. That square is saved as a PNG and wrapped in a standard ICO header, a layout Windows Vista and later, and all modern browsers, can read.
Start from a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels for the sharpest result. Simple, bold shapes survive better than fine text, because browsers shrink a favicon down to 16 or 32 pixels in the tab bar. Website owners, bloggers and students building a portfolio site are the usual users.
Limitations
- Each ICO holds a single image size (up to 256 px); it does not pack separate 16, 32 and 48 px versions into one file.
- The embedded image is PNG-compressed, which very old software such as Windows XP may not display.
- Only .png files are accepted on this page; convert JPG or WebP to PNG first.
Frequently asked questions
What size should my PNG be for a favicon?
A square image of 256 × 256 pixels or larger works best. Smaller images are not enlarged, so a 64 px PNG gives a 64 px icon.
Will my transparent background survive?
Yes. The alpha channel is preserved, and any padding added to make a rectangular image square is also transparent.
How do I add the icon to my website?
Upload it to your site's root as favicon.ico, or link it in the page head with a rel="icon" tag. Browsers cache favicons heavily, so a hard refresh may be needed to see the change.
Does the PNG get sent to a server?
No. The ICO is assembled with JavaScript inside this browser tab, and the file is offered straight back to you as a download.
