How to use PNG to SVG Converter

  1. Add .png files, ideally simple graphics with clear shapes.
  2. No settings: tracing uses a fixed 24-colour palette.
  3. Press Convert to SVG and wait while the image is traced.
  4. Download the .svg files and check them in a browser or editor.

Tracing, not wrapping

Some converters merely embed the PNG inside an SVG file, which is still a bitmap. This one actually traces it: the ImageTracer library groups pixels into up to 24 colour layers, follows the edges of each region and writes them as SVG paths. Tiny specks are dropped to keep the file tidy. The result can be scaled up without pixelation and edited in vector tools.

Tracing works well on artwork with a few solid colours and clear outlines, such as a scanned logo, a stamp or a simple icon. Photographs and gradients do not suit it: they produce thousands of small shapes, giant files and a posterised look. For those, keep a PNG or JPG. Clean up a traced logo in a vector editor if exact curves matter.

Limitations

  • Limited to 24 colours, so gradients and photos look posterised.
  • Detailed images can create very large, slow SVG files.
  • There are no controls for colour count, smoothing or detail level.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG become a true vector?

Yes, the output is made of paths, not an embedded bitmap. Its accuracy depends on how simple the source is.

Why is my SVG file huge?

Complex images produce many traced shapes. Use a simpler or smaller PNG, or keep the bitmap format.

Is transparency kept?

The tracer works on the image's RGBA data, but semi-transparent edges may trace imperfectly. Check the result against a coloured background.

Is my image traced on a server?

No. Tracing runs in your browser, so the PNG stays on your device.
