How to use TIFF to SVG Converter

  1. Add .tif or .tiff scans with the upload box.
  2. No options are shown; tracing settings are fixed.
  3. Select Convert to SVG and allow time for large scans.
  4. Download the SVG and review it.

Why start a trace from TIFF

Scanners often save TIFF without lossy compression, which makes it a good source for tracing: edges are clean and free from JPEG blockiness. The tool first decodes the TIFF with the UTIF library, then the ImageTracer library groups the pixels into up to 24 colours and outlines each region as SVG paths, ignoring very small specks.

This suits architectural sketches, hand-drawn diagrams for notes, old logos found only as scans, and black-and-white line art. Large, high-resolution scans contain a lot of detail, so tracing may take a while and the SVG may be large; cropping to the area you need before converting keeps things manageable.

Limitations

  • Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is traced.
  • High-resolution scans can be slow to trace and produce big files.
  • Colour depth is reduced to 8 bits per channel and then to a 24-colour palette.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trace a multi-page scanned document?

Only the first page is used. Split the pages beforehand if you need others.

Is a 600 DPI scan better than 300 DPI?

Higher resolution captures finer lines but slows tracing and enlarges the SVG. For simple line art, a moderate resolution is usually enough.

Will photographs trace well?

No, they come out posterised. Tracing is meant for flat artwork.

Is my scan kept private?

Yes. Both decoding and tracing run on your device.
