How to use WAV to MP3 Converter

  1. Click the drop zone or drag in one or more .wav files.
  2. Play the first recording in the preview player.
  3. Hit Convert to MP3 and follow the progress percentage.
  4. Download the MP3s, or all of them as one ZIP.

How much smaller will the MP3 be?

CD-quality stereo WAV uses about 1,411 kbps. The MP3 is encoded with libmp3lame -q:a 2, which averages roughly 170–210 kbps for music and less for speech, so files commonly shrink by 80 to 90 per cent. Sample rate and channels are kept.

This is the conversion most people need after recording a lecture, a mock-interview practice session or a voice-over on a laptop. For archiving masters, keep the WAV; for anything you send to someone, the MP3 is far more practical.

Limitations

  • Bitrate is fixed at VBR quality 2; for a specific lower bitrate use Compress Audio, which also outputs MP3.
  • WAV files in unusual encodings (for example some ADPCM or 32-bit float variants) may convert, but rare codecs can fail.
  • Very large WAVs, above about 500 MB, can exhaust browser memory.

Frequently asked questions

Will I hear the difference after converting?

At VBR quality 2 most people cannot tell MP3 from WAV on normal headphones, especially for speech.

Is mono WAV kept as mono?

Yes. The tool does not change channel count, and LAME encodes mono efficiently, giving an even smaller file.

Do I need to upload my recordings?

No upload happens. FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly in the page, so the WAVs never leave your device.
