How to use WebP to AVIF Converter
- Select .webp files.
- Set Quality; start around 70 and adjust after comparing sizes.
- Click Convert to AVIF.
- Download each file or all of them in a ZIP.
Is WebP to AVIF worth it
WebP already beats JPG, but AVIF frequently goes further, especially at lower bitrates where it keeps edges cleaner. For a site that has standardised on WebP, converting the heaviest images to AVIF can trim bandwidth further. The conversion decodes the WebP in the browser and encodes AVIF natively or through a WebAssembly encoder, with alpha transparency preserved.
Gains are not guaranteed: a small or heavily compressed WebP may not get smaller, and each lossy re-encode can soften detail. Compare the size on the download button with your original before replacing anything. Animated WebP files are flattened to one frame, because the image passes through a single canvas.
Limitations
- Animated WebP turns into a still AVIF.
- Savings vary; some files barely shrink or even grow.
- AVIF encoding is slower and uses more processing power than WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Will the AVIF always be smaller?
Not always. Compare the sizes after converting and keep whichever is smaller for acceptable quality.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes, AVIF supports alpha and the transparent areas are carried across.
What happens to animated WebP?
Only one frame is encoded, producing a still image.
Is the conversion done locally?
Yes. Your WebP files never leave the browser.
