When a full-image blur helps
The blur radius is in pixels, so the same value looks stronger on a small image than on a large one. Around 4–8 px on a typical phone photo gives a soft-focus feel, while 25 px and above turns it into a smooth colour field.
Blurred photos make good backgrounds for presentation slides, posters and quote cards because text placed on top stays readable. They are also used for wallpapers and video thumbnails. Near the edges, the blur samples transparent pixels beyond the frame, so a thin, slightly faded border can appear at higher values.
Limitations
- The entire image is blurred; to hide one face or number plate, use Pixelate or a selective editor instead.
- Blur is applied through canvas filters, which Safari only offers behind a developer flag, so Safari users may see no effect.
- Heavy blur can leave softened, slightly see-through edges around the frame.
Frequently asked questions
Can I blur just the background behind a person?
Yes, use the Blur Background tool, which detects the subject with an in-browser AI model and keeps it sharp.
Is blurring enough to hide sensitive text?
Light blur can sometimes be partly reversed or read. For documents, cover the text completely or pixelate with large blocks.
Which blur value should I use for a slide background?
Start around 15–20 px and adjust until the details disappear but the colours remain recognisable.
