How to use Make a Photo Black and White

  1. Drop in the colour images you want to convert.
  2. Look at the instant preview of the first image; no settings are required.
  3. Press Apply & Download to save the greyscale copies.

How the greyscale conversion works

The tool applies the browser's built-in grayscale filter at 100%. Rather than averaging red, green and blue equally, it weights them by how bright each looks to the eye, with green counting most and blue least. That keeps skin tones, skies and foliage in natural-looking tonal relationships.

Black and white versions are useful for printing on a mono laser printer, making scanned notes easier to read, or giving portraits a classic feel. Some forms and ID uploads also ask for a greyscale scan, though always check the exact instruction before converting an official photo.

Limitations

  • It relies on the canvas filter feature, which Safari (including iPhone and iPad browsers) ships only behind an experimental flag as of 2025, so there the image may come out unchanged. Chrome, Edge and Firefox support it.
  • There is no control over contrast or channel mix; use the brightness and contrast tool afterwards if needed.
  • The output keeps three colour channels, so file size does not drop the way a true single-channel greyscale file would.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make only part of the photo black and white?

No, the whole image is converted. Selective colour effects need a full photo editor.

Will this make my file smaller?

Usually only slightly. The image is still stored as RGB, just with equal values in each channel.

Why does nothing change on my iPhone?

Safari has not switched on canvas filters by default. Open the page in Chrome or Firefox on a computer or Android phone instead.
