How to use Invert Image Colours

  1. Add the image or images to invert.
  2. Review the preview; inversion has no settings.
  3. Press Apply & Download to save the negatives.

Practical uses for inverted colours

Inversion subtracts each red, green and blue value from 255, so the operation is exactly reversible: inverting the output again gives back the original colours. Transparency is left untouched.

Beyond the artistic effect, it has handy everyday uses. Inverting a scanned page of black-on-white notes gives white text on black, which some readers find easier on the eyes at night. Scanning or photographing an old colour or black-and-white film negative and inverting it gives a rough positive preview, although colour negatives will still carry an orange cast that needs further correction.

Limitations

  • Colour film negatives come out with a blue-green tint because the orange film base is not compensated for.
  • On Safari the canvas filter used here is not enabled by default, so the image may download unchanged.
  • Saving to JPG adds light compression, so inverting twice will not give a bit-perfect copy of a JPG original.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo an inversion?

Yes, run the inverted image through the tool again. With PNG files the colours return exactly.

Does it work on transparent PNGs?

Yes. Colours are inverted but transparent areas stay transparent.

Will it convert my film negatives properly?

It gives a usable preview, especially for black-and-white film. Colour negatives need extra colour correction afterwards.
