Where the sepia look comes from
Sepia toning was a chemical process used in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to make silver prints last longer, and it left them with a reddish-brown cast. This tool imitates the look with the browser's sepia filter at 100%, mapping each pixel's colour through a fixed matrix that desaturates it and pushes it towards warm browns.
The effect suits heritage-themed invitations, history project covers, social posts about old family photos, and slides where you want an image to feel archival rather than modern.
Limitations
- Strength is fixed at full; there is no slider for a lighter tint.
- Safari keeps canvas filters behind an experimental setting, so on Safari the download may show no change. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- It changes colour only; it does not add grain, scratches or vignetting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make the sepia effect weaker?
Not on this page. For a subtler look, apply sepia here and then lower saturation or contrast with the brightness and contrast tool.
Is sepia the same as black and white?
No. Black and white uses pure greys, while sepia tints those tones brown for a warmer feel.
Are my photos kept anywhere?
No. Each picture is filtered in this browser tab and handed back to you; nothing is stored on a server.
